Main Roof

Preparation for constructing the timber framed grid shell roof which spreads over the majority of the Forum Project is getting underway. Strategically placed Glass and EFTE panels will give a dappled spread of light throughout the main atrium of the Forum Building - inspired by the large collection of trees on campus - the roofs design will mirror the abstract shade of a natural canopy.
The preparatory works needed in order to assemble such a large structure are a challenge of their own. Sir Robert McAlpine’s staff have been working on designing the complex birdcage scaffold structure that will provide temporary support to workers and the roof itself whilst construction is ongoing.

The specially commissioned glass artwork designed by South West artist Alexander Beleschenko is starting to be fitted and is the major new artwork going into the scheme. The new Reception building being constructed as part of the Forum Project has a glass frontage featuring ceramic printed glass comprised of bands of colour. An early glimpse of the glass work, as well as the rapidly progressing Piazza and Stocker Road, can be seen from North Park road by the new INTO building.

Two prefabricated bridges that will span The Street have been lifted into position. After passing this milestone work can get fully underway on creating the supporting structures for the construction of the main roof. The bridges will give access between the Library, Auditorium and Exploration Labs and on into Devonshire House.
