What happens next?

The Forum Project

The flagship Forum project will be officially opened by Her Majesty The Queen and His Royal Highness The Duke Of Edinburgh on May 2. The Queen will carry out the official opening during a visit to the University of Exeter as part of the Diamond Jubilee Tour.  

The main contractor Sir Robert McAlpine is completing the final aspects of the works. In order to carry out these finishing works, the hoarding line and pathways surrounding the site will change, however, safety fencing and barriers will be in place where necessary and pedestrian access will be maintained at all times.

The Great Hall piazza area and the new University Reception, which features the specially commissioned glass artwork designed by South West artist Alexander Beleschenko, opened in the autumn of 2011.

The supermarket, Natwest bank, Blackwell Bookshop and Guild print shop remain open for business in Queen's Car Park.

Once completed, The Forum will provide an inspirational mix of outside and inside spaces, including the new Student Services Centre, technology rich learning spaces, a 400-seat lecture theatre, 12 seminar rooms and retail and catering outlets.

Business School

The £18m investment by the University of Exeter for a new building for the Business School has now been completed.

This project has created additional world-class facilities for research, teaching, learning and social interaction. The expansion will help meet the considerable demand for places. Our Business School continues to go from strength to strength. It has the highest entry tariff in University and remains the top business school in the UK for student satisfaction.

School of Biosciences

A multi-million pound project to create world class facilities for Biosciences has also recently been handed over. The Geoffrey Pope building on the University’s Streatham Campus has benefited from significant investment to enhance its research and teaching facilities. The major refurbishment project will also support the School’s ambitions to be a leading international centre in its field. The new facilities include a fully-operational research suite, three high-quality research facilities, four specialist laboratories to cater for chemical, biochemical and analytical needs, and state-of-the-art aquaria.

Sir Henry Wellcome Building for Mood Disorders Research

The Sir Henry Wellcome Building for Mood Disorders Research was officaially launched in March 2012. The £3.6 million building is dedicated to researching treatments for mood disorders such as depression and Bipolar Disorder. It provides state-of-the-art facilities to carry out experimental and applied clinical research into mood disorders.  It provides a centre for psychological research, assessment, treatment and training that aims to benefit all people who suffer from mood disorders. This new clinical research facility houses individual and group treatment rooms, with built-in audiovisual recording.

Birks Grange

The redevelopment of Birks Grange is now complete, and more than 800 students are currently enjoying the new facilities having moved in at the start of the 2011 Autumn Term. An informal ceremony attended by local residents and staff from UPP and the University was held to mark the completion of the project. The enhanced, en-suite and studio rooms are designed to the highest standards and offer bright, modern and vibrant accommodation.

Lafrowda

The Lafrowda area continues to be busy with construction work and this means footpath diversions and hoardings are in place across the site, while machinery is in operation.

The first four new residence blocks at Lafrowda were opened in the autumn of 2011. The main contractors Cowlin have since erected timber frames for the new phase of new facilities, and internal works are now taking place. Some areas of the existing footpaths will be temporarily closed while works are carried out on the site.  Pathways and kerbing are also being installed over the coming weeks.

The final phase of the redevelopment is due for completion by late summer 2012.

INTO International Students’ Centre (Stocker Road)

The INTO Academic Centre was completed at the start of 2011 and opened for staff and students in February. This exciting, purpose-built development provides an inspirational mix of facilities that will help deliver a world-class student experience. This stylish, three-storey facility is a sociable, innovative and inspiring addition to the University of Exeter's campus.

It provides state-of-the-art facilities such as flexible teaching spaces, a lecture theatre and a learning resource centre, among others, while the striking glazed climate wall at the front of the building will help provide an exciting environment to study and relax.

INTO Residences (Duryard)

The first phase of the redevelopment of Duryard was completed in May, which saw INTO provide around 500 accommodation spaces for international students. A second project, which will see a further 180 rooms built by UPP on the same site, is now underway and underway and will be be completed in 2012. The timber frames for the new buildings have now been erected, and internal works are underway.

This final phase of the redevelopment is due for completion in late summer 2012.

Work to refurbish Kay House was completed at the beginning of 2011. This world-class facility is a significant new resource both for students and for the broader community. It includes a recital hall, a sound-proofed band practice room, a cabaret space, a chamber music room, jazz bar and a sound studio that can record events taking place around the building.

Car parking

In order to improve the safety for pedestrians, cyclists and drivers on campus, parking on Queen’s Drive has been removed.

The University’s main car parks, A and B, are located near the Innovation Centre which is just a few minutes’ walk from central campus. At peak times a minibus shuttle service is in operation. There are other spaces available across the campus and a special map has been designed to help guide you. A list of the locations of our accessible parking spaces is also available.

Stocker Road

As of 5th January 2011 Stocker Road is closed between the junctions with Rennes Drive and North Park Road for pedestrians and vehicles, except for access to the new INTO academic building. This is to allow for the continued construction works associated with the Forum Project, as well as road realignment and resurfacing, to take place. Access to the central campus area for all vehicles, including buses and cycles, will be via Queens Drive only. North Park Road and Rennes Drive will remain open and continue to be the route off campus. Pedestrian access to the INTO building will be via North Park Road and the path through the plantation. Access to the Library will be unaffected.
