Professor Rick Rylance
Head of the School of Arts . Languages and Literatures (SALL). I am Professor of English with research interests in nineteenth- and twentieth-century literature and intellectual history. I have a particular interest in interdisciplinarity. I have taught in several universities of different kinds, both research- and teaching-intensive. I also spent a year at the University of California at Berkeley , and have taught in Hongkong and, with the British Council, in South Korea . As Dean of Arts at Anglia Ruskin University and Head of SALL I have had close involvement in the development of education policy and management and, as a head of English in various forms, have plenty of experience at operational level.
I began my career as a secondary schoolteacher, have a professional teaching qualification and publications in this area, and have sustained my interest in the relationship between the secondary and tertiary sectors. I served for six years as an advisor to the English section of Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (QCA), chairing a number of committees and enquiries and authoring two reports (on implementation of A and A/S Subject Criteria for English and on the comparability of ‘A' level and International Baccalaureate qualifications in English). I also worked on the QCA ‘scrutiny' programme which monitors the standard of public examinations in English at all levels, including a stint in Northern Ireland . In HE, I have worked as QAA Specialist Subject Assessor and was Deputy Chair of the QAA Benchmark Group for English. (The document still serves as the Benchmark Statement for English.) I was Director of the HEQC/QAA Graduate Standards Programme project on the HE Curriculum in English (1996-7) which produced a foundational published report. With a colleague, I established the English Subject Centre, now part of the Higher Education Academy, and until 2008 was Deputy Chair of its Management and Advisory Boards. I have wide experience of external examining across the sector.
More generally, I served for many years as Chair of the Council for College and University English (CCUE), the national subject association in English, and am currently a member of the English Association HE Committee, and the Executive of the Council of University Deans of Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities (CUDASSH). I recently chaired the Sub-panel for English in the 2008 RAE.
