Dr Steve Gaskin
Current position: Head of Skills, Education Enhancement
My academic background was in Geography at Queen Mary, University of London , where I undertook a BSc and PhD, the later which took me to the Himalaya for four years where I assessed levels of soil erosion. I am a member of the HEA and have an Open University PGCert in Higher Education Management. I worked for the Higher Education Academy for several years, in the Subject Centre for Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences (GEES), where I managed and contributed to a wide-range of educational workshops and conferences, set up and edited over 12 editions of a new learning and teaching publication (Planet), and worked on a variety of pedagogic research projects. I have published my PhD work, and more recently a range of pedagogic research papers. I was a previous member of the editorial board of the Journal of Geography in Higher Education.
As former Director of Postgraduate Training, I established the Effective Researcher Development Programme at the University of Exeter , which won a national award in 2006. I am now Head of Skills in Education Enhancement and manage a team working on students' skills development across the whole cohort of students at Exeter .
A summary of my activities which are relevant to the Education Forum include:
Almost 10 years of experience in managing aspects of learning, teaching and skills development initiatives, at the local and national levels.
- Project director of new tri-partite £150K ‘e-skills for researchers' collaboration with the University's of Bath and Bristol and Great Western Research (GWR).
- External consultant for Imperial College London and the University of Bath ;
- UKGRAD (‘Vitae') National GRADschool Director and SWW Steering Group Member;
- Member of HEFCE's new strategic advisory committee for Enterprise and Skills.
