Professorial and Senior Salaries Committee

Terms of Reference and Membership 2016/17

1

The terms of reference of the Professorial and Senior Salaries Committee are:

(a)

Within strategy, policy and parameters determined by the Remuneration Committee, to review and determine the remuneration, benefits and conditions of employment of:

 
  • Professors
  • Directors of Professional Services (other than those within the remit of the Remuneration Committee)
  • other senior Professional Services managers who are paid above the top contribution point of Grade H
(b)

Taking account of comparative information on the remuneration, benefits and conditions of employment in the University sector and elsewhere as appropriate.

(c)

To make recommendations to Remuneration Committee on performance related reward arrangements and other additional payments for members of College Executives, other Directors of Professional Services and other staff within the remit of the Committee (eg Heads of Discipline and similar roles).

(d)

To review the arrangements for the remuneration of Professors and other senior officers of the University within the remit of the Committee, taking account of best practice within the University sector and elsewhere as appropriate and to make recommendations to Remuneration Committee for improvements. 

(e)

To set parameters and delegation arrangements for the remuneration of new appointments (including promotion to Personal Chair) and for discretionary revisions to remuneration made between meetings of the Committee and to review decisions made between meetings of the Committee.

(f)

To approve any severance terms for members Professors and other senior officers of the University within the remit of the Professorial and Senior Salaries Committee on the termination of their employment. 

(g)

To promote the University’s responsibilities for equality and diversity by ensuring that relevant issues are given full consideration in all matters relating to the remuneration of all staff falling within the remit of the Committee.

(h)

To provide Remuneration Committee with a full report of its decisions which is transparent and meets the requirements of good governance.

The membership of the Professional and Senior Salaries Committee is:

 
  • the Vice-Chancellor (who will be the Chair of the Committee)
  • the Provost (who will act as Chair of the Committee in the absence of the Vice-Chancellor)
  • the three Deputy Vice Chancellors
  • Director of Human Resources (who will act as Secretary to the Committee)
  • Registrar and Secretary (for Professional Services senior officers)

The Committee will determine its own timetable for meetings but will be expected to meet on a minimum of two occasions each year.
