Dr Claire Baines BSc (Hons) PhD PG Cert HE
Dr Claire Baines became the Chief Operating Officer on 1 April 2013. Claire's role comprises overall management responsibility for a wide range of activities, including HR, student recruitment, IT, libraries, catering and accommodation, marketing, fundraising, estates and planning and international relations. Claire previously performed a similar role at De Montfort University. Prior to this she held a range of senior management positions at the University of Sheffield, including the post of Academic Secretary and Head of Academic Services. This latter role enabled Claire to support academic departments and leaders in organisational development programmes and changes. In her early career she worked at a range of other Higher Education institutions.
National roles have included:
- Completing an international secondment at the Ministry of Education (MEXT) in Tokyo, Japan in 2009. This secondment focussed on the Japanese Government's efforts to give greater fiscal responsibility and autonomy to Higher Education Institutions (HEIs), introduce assessments of research quality and to position research-intensive organisations internationally via its Global 30 programme.
- Advising the Leadership Foundation for Higher Education (LFHE) and the Association of Heads of Administration (AHUA) on the introduction and format of a national graduate internship scheme for the profession of administrative leadership and management in Higher Education.
- Supporting the British Universities Finance Directors Group (BUFDG) in 2012/13 to scope and develop a Procurement Academy to serve HEIs through continuing professional development activities. The Academy has been noted by UUK as a nationally important development for its capacity to support efficiencies in Higher Education.
