Definition of the ASA

ASA logoThe Academic Staff Association (ASA) is the Academic Community of the University and it is represented by 26 elected members who act as Senators, making up half of the University Senate. Each elected member serves a three year term on Senate.

The ASA Senators contribute to the governance of the University by promoting academic integrity and excellence with respect to all matters that concern education, learning and research to ensure that it is the foremost activity of the University and that the values and ideals of scholarship are maintained at the highest international level. The ASA seeks to engage all members of the University community in critical discourse to stimulate innovative and constructive contributions to the debate about the future of the University, its staff, students and its position within a changing social, cultural and political context.

ASA makes representations to the University in the following ways:

  • Senate Membership
  • Membership of University Committees
  • Representation on Task and Finish Groups
  • Regular meetings with the Vice-Chancellor and other members of VCEG and Professional Staff
  • By voicing concerns & suggestions in relation to ASA responsibilities outside the School structure
