Baskin in the Forum is an exhibition of original prints by members of the University of Exeter Student Art Society, inspired by the work of artist Leonard Baskin.

Leonard Baskin worked collaboratively with the poet Ted Hughes, illustrating several of his collections of poems, including Cave Birds and Crow.

Art Society  members viewed original Baskin prints held in the Heritage Collections Department at the University of Exeter. They were then tutored by Double Elephant Print Workshop in different print processes that Leonard Baskin used, including drypoint and lino and wood cut.  On display is a selection of the wonderful prints they created.

The exhibition also offers the chance to see some reproductions of a selection of Leonard Baskin’s works which are held within the University’s Heritage Collections.

As well as two collections of artists’ proofs by Leonard Baskin, the University holds manuscript drafts of the poem Cave Birds fully catalogued online. All these collections are open for research to members of the public on application to University of Exeter’s Heritage Collections Team.

This project and exhibition are a collaboration between Double Elephant Print Workshop, the University of Exeter Arts & Culture Department and University of Exeter Art Society members. It is supported by the National Lottery through the Heritage Lottery Fund.

Works by local artist Oliver Flexman will be shown in The Street Gallery and at the Exeter Phoenix Gallery (20 July – 31 August). The exhibition explores our relationship with the Arab world through a combination of video, print, drawing, painting and stickers and offers an opportunity to view works which question the stereotypes  that govern our perception and engagement with the Arab World.

Oliver Flexman's works include Everyone knows the Orient, a text from A thousand and one nights made up from over two thousand sequins and Aladdin Ink and Genie Polish, prints that look at the translation of Arab identities into branding in the West.

This work is supported by Arts Council England, University of Exeter Arts & Culture and Exeter Phoenix.
