Supporting students' employability through eXfactor

Rowanna works with the College of Engineering, Mathematics and Physical Sciences as a Careers Consultant. Encouraging students to begin thinking about developing their employability early on, in her role, Rowanna helps "to identify what students might particularly need, and how... [best to] support them, so that can range from workshops through to particular activities and various other things".

One example of employability enhancing opportunities is the eXfactor programme, which encourages students to think about their future careers from Day 1 of their time at university. As Rowanna explains, "I think part of the benefit as a first year is to actually be really open to options… hopefully at the end of your degree, the aim will be to go into a graduate level job, or then to progress onto postgraduate study… Having some understanding of the choices you can make, and the decisions you can be involved in; to… make informed choices, starts from day one.”

Aim 2: Excellent employment experiences & capabilities
To measure and improve the employability attributes of all students through course, extra-curricular and out-of-term-time activities

Employability support

“[eXfactor] is about getting students engaged together and realising that, actually, we do need to be think about internships, work experience and then later graduate opportunities… so it gets it on the agenda quite quickly.”
