Engaging Widening Participation students

Sarah is a Senior Lecturer on the Tremough Campus in Cornwall, and is also heavily involved in Widening Participation, coordinating the work of students and staff to promote science within the local community. "We’ve had students come in and do work experience placements… we have some citizen science projects where we’re actually going out into schools and getting them to collect data for us, and this is data that may one day be published… it's quite an exciting way of getting them involved."

Widening Participation is an essential part of ensuring the University engages with a diverse range of students. As Sarah explains, "it's very important that we do attract the most academically-able applicants because… it improves our research, and it improves the qualities of our degrees... everybody should have the chance to go to university if that’s something that they want to do. Widening Participation is really important because it means… we can speak to those students who haven’t had [as many] opportunities… but actually they might be some of the brightest minds in the country."

Embedding employability skills in the curriculum

"A lot of students don’t know what they want to do when they first arrive, so they need to try a few different things, get work experience, decide what they do like, what they don’t like; they might try something and hate it, and that’s quite valuable because they know that’s something they don’t want to do in the future."

One of the ways Sarah ensures students are receiving the employability support they want is through the Biosciences Student Employability Committee. "It's a group of really dedicated students, and they’re really good at figuring out what it is that the student body wants in terms of employability support. They ask the students and they feed that back to me… and we can make sure that we provide what it is that the students need."
