Make a gift
There are many ways of donating to the University. No amount is too small and all donations are gratefully received.
Online
The University’s online payment facility provides an easy, flexible method to enable you to make your gift. You can make a single gift from your debit/credit card.
Regular Giving
To make a regular gift to the University, please download and complete a donation form. We hope to be able to accept recurring card payments shortly. Giving on a regular basis is very appreciated as it allows the University to plan for the future.
By Post
We welcome all donations to the University. You can also send a cheque made payable to University of Exeter. We can also accept credit card donations via Mastercard or Visa, and donations made via the Charities Aid Foundation (CAF) or other intermediary charities.
Please complete a donation form and return to us at: The Development Office, Northcote House, University of Exeter, Freepost (EX 472) Exeter EX4 4ZH
Call us
To make a gift over the phone please call our Annual Giving Team on 01392 725012. You can set up a regular gift by Direct Debit or a single gift using a credit or debit card.
Gift Aid
You can use Gift Aid to boost the value of your donation by as much as 25p for every £1 that you give. Gift Aid allows us to recover the basic rate income tax paid on any gift. You can qualify for this so long as you are a UK taxpayer and have paid enough UK Income or Capital Gains Tax to cover all of your charitable donations (please note that other taxes such as Council Tax and VAT do not qualify). You must sign a Gift Aid Declaration.
Payroll giving
If your employer operates a charitable giving scheme such as 'Give as You Earn', you can also make tax efficient gifts to the University. Every £10 you give will only cost you £8.00, because you save £2.00 at the basic tax rate (higher rate tax payers will pay only £6).
Give As You Earn is the simplest way to give to charity direct from your pay, tax free. Further information can be obtained from www.cafonline.org under 'For Individuals/Planned Giving'.
Employers Matching Gift Schemes
A simple form (usually available from your personnel or finance department) can be completed and sent to the University. Your employer will then send the University a gift to match your amount.
Stocks and shares
A double tax benefit is available for those giving quoted shares. Individuals can set the full value of their gift against their liability for income tax in the tax year that the gift is made. This is in addition to exemption from capital gains tax on the disposal of the shares. A similar provision now applies to companies in respect of corporation tax. Information pages at IR178 on ‘Giving land, buildings, shares and securities to charity’ are available on the HM Revenue and Customs web site at www.hmrc.gov.uk/charities under ‘Tax Relief for Donors’.
Gifts from the United States
Donors residing in the US, can make their donation directly to the University (via our online giving site) or by sending a cheque with our donation form. Gifts made directly to the University are not eligible for tax deduction.
Donors residing in the US can make their donation tax effectively by giving to either the British Schools & Universities Foundation (BSUF) or to Charities Aid Foundation (CAFAmerica). Both BSUF and CAFAmerica are approved by the US Treasury Department as exempt charitable organisations under section 501(c)(3).
British Schools and Universities Foundation
To make a gift and take a US income tax deduction, you may make a donation to the British Schools & Universities Foundation (BSUF) (Federal I.D. Number 13-616-1189). BSUF charges no fee or commission for its service.
To make your gift please use the standard cover letter template. You should make your donation to British Schools & Universities Foundation and should express 'a preference for the University of Exeter. You may also specify a particular school or project eg. The Annual Fund, Business School, Camborne School of Mines etc'. Please make your check payable to be drawn to the order of the British Schools & Universities Foundation. Such preferences are respected by the Foundation but all grants are made at its sole discretion, as required by the I.R.S.
Alternatively you can make a gift by credit card. You can express a preference for giving to the University by entering 'University of Exeter' in the 'Name of Approved institution you would like to benefit' box. A donor can claim a tax deduction for the full amount donated, even though credit card fees reduce the amount available for grants.
For information about making gifts of securities or other assets to BSUF please contact us at annualfund@exeter.ac.uk.
CAFAmerica
You may suggest a recipient for your gift, but your donation must be to CAFAmerica. These suggestions are non-binding, and the Board of Directors of CAFAmerica has complete control and discretion over the use of the funds. This ensures that gifts to CAFAmerica are tax-deductible and that CAFAmerica fulfils its duties and obligations as a US 501(c)(3) tax-exempt non-profit organisation.
If you would like to make a credit card gift to CAFAmerica, please visit their website. You can express a preference for giving to the University of Exeter by entering 'University of Exeter' in the 'Support a foreign nonprofit' box. You may also specify a particular school or project eg. the Annual Fund, Business School, Camborne School of Mines, etc by entering this into the 'Special Instructions' box. Alternatively you can download a CAFAmerica gift form.
Please note that CAFAmerica accept single gifts of $500 or more and charge an administration fee. For more details see the CAFAmerica website here.
Gifts from Canada
Please make your donation by either credit card or cheque as described above. On receipt of your gift we will send you the appropriate receipt required under Canadian law. This will allow you to offset your gift against taxable income in Canada.
