The 2012 trip was the fourth Exeter volunteering excursion to Ghana

Ghanaian community benefits from student visit

A team of student volunteers taught children and helped renovate a school in Ghana as part of a three week project with the organisation KickStart Ghana.

The nine volunteers from Exeter’s Student Guild were able to make the trip to Ho in Ghana with the support of the Annual Fund. The group conducted lessons for children in a local orphanage, which included a balance of arts and crafts as well as academic work, with the aim of improving the children’s understanding of English and their communication skills.

Whilst there, the group undertook the renovation of a local facility, the Regional Model School. This school was meant to be held as an example for the whole region, yet a lack of funds meant it was dilapidated. The group’s task was to repaint the school, with the help of local painters hired by KickStart Ghana. The Annual Fund supported project has had a huge impact on the school, the children and the community. The renovation work on the Regional Model School effected both the children who attend it as well as the educational reputation of the region.

The funding provided the volunteers with food and accommodation in Ho so they could volunteer efficiently and effectively. This allowed the students to deliver fun, engaging and educational activities to the children at the orphanage, working alongside KickStart Ghana.
