Voluntary work creates opportunities for Cornwall students

History students on the Cornwall Campus have been able to work with the voluntary sector through support from the Annual Fund.

The work they carried out has helped to develop their sense of social responsibility, whilst providing vital new skills and experience to boost their employability prospects.

Students helped out at the Wild Young Parents Project in West Cornwall which helps young mums and their children, at VisAbility, an organisation which supports visually impaired and blind people, and at outdoor education centre BF Adventure for disadvantaged young people and disabled people. They also helped at a youth club in Falmouth.

The funding enabled the project to make two very powerful differences to the Tremough student experience. First, it helped a number of new students adapt more easily to life on campus. Secondly, it helped many students looking to work in the social enterprise sector develop their career prospects by building a portfolio of projects with voluntary and charitable projects.

History Lecturer Dr Catriona Pennell said the project made an impact on the students:

“I am extremely keen to continue this initiative because it has significantly enhanced the student experience in a number of ways. It has helped Freshers to settle into university life, it has encouraged students to develop their employability skills and CVs and it has raised students’ awareness of careers in the third sector.”
