Alumni Dr Les and Claire Halpin (Mathematical Statistics and Operational research 1979, Hon LLD 2011 and Biology 1979 respectively) have given over £1 million to the University. Their philanthropy includes funding PhD scholars researching Rice Blast disease, to facilities within the Business School.
Rice blast is the most serious disease of cultivated rice and affects all the rice-growing regions of the world, causing losses of up to 30% of the global rice harvest.

Martin Cook found an inventive way to raise funds for a vital medical research centre at the University – by allowing donors to choose whether to hear him sing – or not!
The money raised will go towards a new £19m medical research facility, which is being designed to further the world-leading research into diabetes being carried out by Professor Andrew Hattersley FRS and his team.
Bettina Rigg (Law 1978) made the decision to include Exeter in her Will because she recognised the value of her time at the University and the opportunities it had afforded her.
Professor Andrew Lang (Physics 1944) bequeathed £90,000 to support investment in the University library. To celebrate his legacy, a room within the newly refurbished library has been named the 'Lang Room'. Members of Professor Lang’s family were able to attend a special opening to recognise his generosity.
Santander Universities UK has generously supported the University of Exeter in funding and pledged gifts of more than half a million pounds.
This generous philanthropic funding has supported a wide range of projects including studentships, travel bursaries, and exchange programmes.
The rising global population, climate change and a decline in production has seen both UK and international governments pressing for increased food production for the first time in 30 years.
The Centre for Rural Policy Research at Exeter is at the forefront of research examining the impact this change of policy will have on British farmers and the challenges they face to meet it.
PhD scholar Hannah Chiswell is at the heart of this intensive work thanks to funding from the John Oldacre Foundation.
