"Education changes lives and Exeter changed mine. Today that is a good foundation, but it’s not enough just to graduate.
"As an alumni mentor I work directly with an undergraduate each year to help them acquire that edge needed to build their career, giving support, guidance and advice...
"I’m thrilled that this year I have been invited to join the Student’s Guild Board of Trustees. My small contribution gives me the personal satisfaction of doing my bit to help the University that helped me."
Enterprising students are receiving support with their business ideas – through the creation of a Student Entrepreneur in Residence (SEiR).
The part-time role was taken on twelve months ago by new alumnus Tom Carrington-Smith who founded his own company UniSport in 2010 while still an undergraduate. He has been able to split his time between helping current students and growing his own business.
New students were given a first-hand insight into life at the University and the opportunities available through the alumni volunteering programme at a special Freshers’ Week event.
Four alumni volunteers, Holly Keatings (MA English 2009), Tim Walker (Geography 1997), Fin Irwin (Drama 2005) and Martin Corck (St Luke’s School of Education 1979) took part in the new initiative. Students were able to drop in to the informal session and seek advice from the volunteers.
The impact of the University of Exeter's pioneering volunteering programme caught the attention of judges at international organisation CASE. They awarded Exeter the top honour they can bestow - the gold award in their 2012 Circle of Excellence Awards programme.
Since the volunteering programme started at Exeter in 2008 more than 1,500 alumni have taken part, giving more than 15,000 hours of time. Projects have ranged from working on a one-to-one basis to mentor individual students, giving careers talk, practice job interviews and lending expertise to University governance.
