ANG Role: Chair
I began my career as a Senior Physicist with the Science and Engineering Research Council, leading a number of research and development projects at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratories. I subsequently held various senior positions at British Petroleum (BP) before moving to Tradition Financial Services where I was Head of Marketing and Business Development for energy derivatives worldwide. In 1995 I joined International Petroleum Exchange (IPE), the second largest energy trading exchange - re-branded ICE Futures – where I worked for over 10 years, becoming Chief Executive Officer and, ultimately, Chairman.
I have been Chief Executive Officer of Lloyd’s – the world’s leading specialist insurance market – since 2006. Lloyd’s provides insurance services to businesses in over 200 countries and territories across the globe. As Chief Executive, I also sit on both the Council of Lloyd’s and the Lloyd’s Franchise Board. In 2009, as a member of the Insurance Industry Working Group chaired by UK Chancellor Alistair Darling, I contributed to the report looking at the opportunities and challenges that the insurance sector will meet in the future.
I am a Council member of Heart of the City, a charity supporting companies to develop Corporate Social Responsibility, and a Board Member of the Geneva Association, the leading think tank of the world’s largest insurers and reinsurers. I am also a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, a member of the Institute of Directors and member of the Royal Institution.
I enjoy supporting the University’s alumni programme. I first joined the Alumni Network Group in 2009 and have been Chair since 2011.
