"My life at Exeter provided me with a great platform for a career in tax in the City – practising corporate tax provides a continuing challenge in terms of the complexity and changing underlying philosophy in tax law."
Dr Stephen Edge, Hon LLD (LLB Law 1972, Hon LLD 2012)
Corporate Tax Partner – Slaughter and May
ANG Role: College of Social Sciences and International Studies
I joined Slaughter and May in 1973. After qualifying as a solicitor I pursued a career in corporate tax and have been a partner in the firm since 1982.
My wife Mel (who is a University of Exeter alumna) and I have got great pleasure from re-engaging with the University and seeing its success in recent times. It has been good also to renew our links with the Exeter area, triggering many happy memories. This seems to be a common theme with Exeter graduates.
I joined the Alumni Network Group on its inception in 2006 and currently hold responsibility for the College of Social Sciences and International Studies, including the School of Law. In January 2012 I was honoured to accept an Honorary Doctorate from the University.
In 2010 I became a Vice-President of Lancashire County Cricket Club in recognition of my connections with Lancashire Youth Cricket. This brought together two of my great interests - sport and supporting young people.
There are few things that you can do in life that will leave a lasting consequence – but, as well as devoting time to your own children and family, one of the most satisfying ways of achieving this is to help young people as they make their way through the education process and into what, we all hope, will be a successful and fulfilling future.
