BA Sociology 2016

What did you enjoy about your degree programme?

I enjoyed that my degree programme and modules were based on the current research. This meant that I was taught about contemporary issues and topics straight from those in the field. I also enjoyed being able to delve into anthropological topics relating to sociology, meaning I could broaden my understanding of the two disciplines.

Tell us about the award you have received. What does this award mean to you?

I received the Exeter Award during my time at University. In order to achieve this I attended a number of workshops and skills sessions which were recognised as extracurricular achievements that enhanced my employability. I was able to understand what employers look for in graduates, as well as the steps which must be completed when searching for graduate roles after university.

To me, this award shows that I pursued opportunities outside of my degree itself, and I feel I have gained valuable experiences from the Exeter Award which will aid me in my future career.

What has been the highlight of your time at Exeter?

There are far too many highlights to choose from. One would be gaining a first class degree; an absolute dream of mine which came true! A second highlight was becoming President of the Sociology and Anthropology Society in my final year which was hard work, but also very fulfilling and a lot of fun.

What will you miss the most about university?

I will miss spending time with my wonderful friends, first and foremost. I will also miss learning about sociology from some of the most amazing lecturers.

What advice would you give to current and future students?

I would say try to savour every minute of your time at Exeter, the three years go by extremely quickly and you will soon find yourself graduating! Also I would say try and get the balance of social life and work just right, dont forget that you are not only there to gain a degree, but to also discover who you are and to take advantage of different opportunities!

What are your plans now that you have graduated?

I am going to do some travelling around South-East Asia for a month, something which I have been wanting to do for a while. I have also managed to gain a project support and business development role in an oil, gas, and energy company in Bristol. I hope to work in this role whilst looking for an opportunity in the luxury hospitality and travel industry in a customer-facing role, as this is the sector I would love to work in!
