Exeter law graduate Fiona Shackleton becomes peer
Fiona Shackleton, one of the most distinguished lawyers of her generation, has become a life peer. She will sit on the Tory bench.
As an undergraduate, Fiona Shackleton studied law at Exeter, graduating in 1977. In July 2010, she became an Honorary Graduate of the University after being awarded an Hon LLD (Doctor of Law).
She was one of 54 new peers who joined the House of Lords last week. She was welcomed to parliament by, amongst others, Baroness Floella Benjamin, the University’s Chancellor, who became a Liberal Democrat peer in June.
Fiona Shackleton qualified as a solicitor in 1980. Prior to starting her distinguished legal career she trained as a cordon bleu chef, becoming an executive caterer for a short while.
In 1984, she joined Farrer & Co, the royal solicitors, becoming a partner three years later. She achieved public prominence after acting for Prince Andrew and Prince Charles during their divorces and subsequently represented Paul McCartney in his divorce from Heather Mills.
At present, Fiona Shackleton is a partner at Payne Hicks Beach, whom she joined in 2001. The Lincoln’s Inn practice is best known for its family and private client work. She remains Personal Solicitor to Prince William and Prince Harry.
A bridge and opera enthusiast, she lives in London and is married to fellow Exeter alumnus Ian Shackleton with whom she has two daughters.
