Two alumni who met as students at the University recently celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary.

Professor Jenny and Stephen Harrow (Politics 1968 and History 1967 respectively) returned to Exeter's Streatham campus for a special reunion to mark the occasion.

The couple, who have very fond memories of their time at the University, were joined by fellow Exeter friends for the reunion lunch at Reed Hall, on Friday July 2.

Stephen recalled that his first real meeting with his wife-to-be was 'a touch strained', explaining that, in 1966, the University Conservative Association, of which he was then Chairman, needed an Editor for the Yearbook.

Not imaging that any member would actually volunteer, he gave the job to one of the Committee who seemed quite keen. At that point, out of the blue, so to speak, another member, not then a particular friend, one Jenny Armes, approached him for the job of Yearbook Editor.

'I tried, pusillanimously and unsuccessfully, to pass the buck to the Hon Sec, Chris Philips (Geography 1968, later to be Stephen's Best Man, and among those present on 2 July). Jenny was far from amused, and made her opinion of my management all too clear - something that she has been doing consistently ever since.'

Jenny declined to comment...

Both Jenny and Stephen are long-standing supporters of the University and provide scholarships to help talented cricketers, both women and men.
