Showcasing Science

Over 100 alumni attended this year's Showcasing Science Reception

Showcasing Science Reception

Nearly 100 alumni and supporters gathered in London’s iconic Lloyd’s Building to hear Professor Kevin J. Gaston discuss ‘the power of ecosystems’ – just one area of work being tackled by the University’s prestigious new Environment and Sustainability Institute (ESI).

Professor Gaston, the Director of the ESI, outlined plans for the Institute, being built on the University's Cornwall Campus at a cost of £30 million.

Due for completion next year, the ESI will bring together researchers from across a range of different disciplines to conduct cutting-edge research into the consequences of environmental change, and the mitigation and management of its effects.

The Showcasing Science reception began with an address by the Vice-Chancellor of the University, Professor Sir Steve Smith, who outlined some of the other developments at Exeter, including its £230 million investment in sciences.

After the speakers there was an opportunity for alumni and staff to network together.

Showcasing Science was generously hosted by alumnus Dr Richard Ward (Chemistry 1979, PhD 1983, Hon LLD 2009), CEO of Lloyd’s of London.
