Alumna Crystal Lane selected for the Paralympics

Alumna Crystal Lane has been selected to represent Paralympics GB Cycling squad at the London 2012 Games. She will compete in the 3 km pursuit on 30 August; Time Trial on 5 September and the Road Race on 6 September.

Paracyclist Crystal was a member of our prestigious Sports Scholarship Scheme during her time at Exeter and graduated with a 2:1 in Exercise and Sports Science in the summer of 2011.

She then studied an Msc in Sports Nutrition at Loughborough University. Whilst at Exeter, Crystal was selected for the GB squad and won numerous accolades including the Bronze medal in the C5 Road Race at the Paralympic Cycling World Championships in Denmark in September 2011.

Crystal was invited to join the elite and highly prestigious Jaguar Academy of Sport as one of their Rising Stars. She had the honour of receiving the Jaguar Academy of Sport Special Recognition award at the Awards Ceremony at the Savoy Hotel in London in November of the same year and has also picked up the ‘Most Inspirational British Sportswoman of the Year’ after her performance at the Paralympic World Championships.

On hearing of her selection, Crystal commented “I would like to thank all of you at Exeter for the support I’ve received up until this point and I hope I can do you all proud at the forthcoming Games”.

Nick Beasant, Assistant Director of Sports (Performance & Competitions), was delighted with the selection: “It such great news for Crystal that all her hard work and training has paid off and she will be yet another one of our high performance athletes and former sports scholars to wear a Team GB vest at this summer’s Olympic and Paralympic Games. Crystal is a highly talented and committed cyclist and we wish her all the very best in her quest for Olympic success at the end of August.”
