How To Be Your Own Boss As A Single Mum

New book singles out future entrepreneurs

Entrepreneur, single mum and alumna Ali Golds has written a book aimed at offering inspiration and practical advice to other parents in a similar situation who want to start their own business.

How To Be Your Own Boss As A Single Mum came about after conversations with parents in a similar situation who were lacking in confidence and felt they had no skills to offer the workplace.

“As a single mum myself I know that the skills I use in my personal life are exactly the same as the skills I use in my business life,” said Ali. “I decided to prove it to these wonderful ladies – and show them how amazing they really are – by writing a 30 day blog that demonstrated this each day.

“The feedback was overwhelming, and I was contacted by women all over the country telling me that the blog had not only inspired them but made them feel better about themselves. One even told me that it had kicked her out of bed on a particularly low day.

I decided then to write the book, a lifelong dream, and have had some great responses from readers so far.”

Ali became a single mum in 2005 and four years later completed her PGCE at Exeter. Afterwards she returned to Sussex and set up Operation Enterprise, an enterprise education consultancy aimed at supporting student entrepreneurs, through a wide range of schools, colleges and other organisations.

She also runs a social enterprise organisation The Juno Project which trains and supports women who wish to work for themselves, particularly single mums and those who have suffered domestic abuse. During her PGCE Ali had to seek sanctuary in a refuge after suffering domestic abuse, despite which she went on to win the Ted Wragg Award for Outstanding Trainee Teacher.
