Alumni ask whether ‘Voluntourism’ does more harm than good with Debating Society

Richard is the founder of Bhubesi Pride, a British charity that organises teams of volunteers for coaching expeditions to support rugby and community development in schools and community centres in nine countries across east and southern Africa. Richard and Oliver opposed the motion that Voluntourism does more harm than good in front of an audience of 300 students in the Amory Moot Room, with others joining the debate on Twitter.

Oliver summarised their case that excellent organisations with talented and dedicated volunteers who work with great people in a country, bring real impact to developing communities. Unfortunately the opposition lost the debate but they put forward a great case and the audience was very torn. Richard and Oliver joined the students and other debaters for a drink in the RAM bar after the debate.
