Exeter delivered its first international careers fair in China. This high profile event, located in the famous surroundings of the Fairmont Peace Hotel in the centre of the financial district of Shanghai, was oversubscribed with over 400 recent graduates registered for the event. Twenty multi-national graduate recruiters attended with many more registered on the waiting list. The world’s top graduate employers participated including Abercrombie and Fitch, Apple, EY, HSBC, HP, IBM, Unilever and many more.

Professor Janice Kay, Provost and Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor, commented “The University of Exeter puts the employment of its graduates in the world’s top industries and businesses as one of its most important priorities. We welcome this spectacular event in Shanghai, and are pleased to have attracted such leading graduate recruiters to meet our talented and innovative graduates.”

Employers attending the event have praised the organisation, the numbers of high-quality graduates attending and the innovative nature of the event.

Horst Gallo, HR Director at IBM Greater China Group, said: “My congratulations to your team on a terrific careers event in Shanghai. We are delighted to meet so many young graduates from the GW4 universities and are especially happy to receive a number of good CV profiles from some high quality candidates. We had some great interactions with the GW4 students as well and are excited to learn their interest to IBM career opportunities.”

Richard King, Senior Managing Director, North & Eastern China for Michael Page, said, “Congratulations on hosting such a successful event. It was a great opportunity to meet so many recent returnee Chinese graduates from Exeter alongside a group of high quality corporate employers. We look forward to working with you in the future and hopefully a number of your alumni will embark on exciting careers with Michael Page China.”

“Exeter already has an extensive portfolio of careers fairs that are amongst the most successful in the UK” says Paul Blackmore, Head of Student Employability and Academic Success “and I am delighted that this range of high profiled events now includes careers fairs in China. Within 7 days of opening for employer registrations we had reached our maximum capacity. Considering this is our inaugural event, it demonstrates just how attractive our graduates are to prospective employers and the growing reputation Exeter has around the world for developing the most employable graduates.”

The fair was delivered as part of the GW4 partnership with the Universities of Bath, Bristol and Cardiff. Planning is now in train to deliver a larger event in Shanghai in response to demand, and to include Beijing and Hong Kong in 2016.

Remarking on the innovative collaboration between Exeter and its University partners, Nick Lesser, Senior Director, Talent Acquisition Greater China for The Nielsen Company, commented: “We found the GW4 Shanghai careers fair to be of great benefit. The combination of four high-quality universities in one event meant that we met many excellent potential candidates, and we are looking forward to continuing and furthering our collaboration in future.”
