Alumnae Learn about the ‘Glass Cliff’

This year’s reception saw keynote speaker Professor Michelle Ryan speak about her research into the ‘Glass Cliff’. This is a term used describe the phenomenon whereby women are more likely to be found in leadership positions that are associated with a greater risk of failure and criticism.

The reception, which began with drinks and networking, was held at the beautiful University Women’s Club in Mayfair. There were over 80 female alumni in attendance at the event which began with a warm welcome from Penny Curtis, of the alumnae group, and Jane Chafer, Director of Communications and Corporate Affairs at Exeter, who gave an update on the university. Keynote speaker, Michelle Ryan, then gave a unique insight into over a decade’s worth of research on the ‘Glass Cliff’, exploring the evidence and real-world implications of this topical issue. Second speaker, Jonathan Smith, followed by sharing his work for charities and speaking about the importance of feeling valued and trusted at work.

Following these fascinating talks, questions were taken from the room leading to discussions about how we can encourage our children to avoid gender stereotypes and the rate of change of equality. The evening then returned to networking over drinks and nibbles and alumnae had the opportunity to meet and talk to fellow graduates from a large range of different jobs and experiences.
