Alumni Industry Insights, Hong Kong – 24 June 2020

The first of our virtual events organised by the Exeter Hong Kong Alumni Group (EHKAG) took place on Wednesday 24 June. The event featured three speakers, Chris Tang (LLB Law 1996), Carman Lau (BA Business and Management 2008) Head of Talent Acquisition at Jardine Matheson Limited and Florence Fung (BA Mathematics with Accounting 2013 and MSc Financial Analysis and Fund Management 2014) Associate Wealth Management Director at AIA International Limited, who all shared their career stories in an informal ‘fireside chat’ format, then took questions from the audience of students and alumni located around the globe.

Chris (Managing Director at Star Anise and EHKAG Chair), hosted the event and asked the panellists to share their tips for career success which included: Strong IT skills which are particularly relevant in this climate of home/online working; soft skills such as communication and collaboration; starting early (job hunting and applications); getting lots of practice with online tests; and of course some luck!

Florence shared her top tip for success when applying for graduate schemes, having gained a position at the Hang Seng Bank where there were only 20 places and an average of over 4,000 applications: Early preparation of your CV and interview practice is essential since programmes in Banking usually run from September to November.

Carman developed a wealth of experience in Talent Acquisition after completing internships in banking, then a placement in HR at CITI, offered guidance on interviews which look different in different industries: There are normally 3-4 interview stages on most graduate schemes often involving aptitude testing (verbal and numerical), game-based and group assessments to check behaviour, and an individual interview where is important you research the organisation. Again the key is practice and also to understand questions before rushing to answer in an interview setting.

EHKAG are planning to host more virtual events like this so please connect with the group on Facebook and LinkedIn for updates.
