Vitamin D deficiency is associated with a substantially increased risk of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease in older people, according to a new study.

Alumna wins translation prize

The powerful story of an Iranian girl held in prison was turned into a prize winning translation by alumna Lesley Lawn. Parts of Lesley’s winning entry will be read at a special event at SOAS, University of London in October.
 

Record turnout at ninth annual Golf Day

The ninth annual Alumni Golf Day took place in August, with 19 teams taking on the picturesque St George’s Hill course in Surrey. The event raises funds for the University’s Golf programme and its ongoing success is thanks to the efforts of organisers John Gilbert (Economics 1972) and Rod Alexander (History 1971). Exeter raises the bar in Good University Guide

Exeter has reached its highest ever place of 7th in the national rankings and is the leading university in the South West, according to The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide. High levels of student satisfaction, a low dropout rate and good research grades are making the University of Exeter a fixture in the top 10 of the league table.
 

University of Exeter tops Russell Group for student satisfaction

Students at Exeter are the most satisfied of any of the Russell Group universities, according to the latest results from the National Student Survey (NSS) 2014. The University came top of the 24 leading UK research-led institutions in the pivotal survey’s results.
 

New study takes the shine off magpie folklore

In European culture, it is widely accepted that magpies (Pica pica) are the pilferers of the bird kingdom, unconditionally attracted to sparkly things and prone to pinching them for their nests. However, according to a new study, magpies are not attracted to shiny objects and don’t routinely steal small trinkets such as jewellery.

 

Four years of Exeter in China

The University’s China representatives in Beijing and Shanghai marked four years with Exeter this year. Limin Dai and Bess Ying have been instrumental in aiding the alumni community, as well as establishing ties between Exeter and some of China's top universities.

Volunteer in the Spotlight: Gillian Reeves

Gillian supports recent alumni as one of the inaugural committee members of Exetra and until recently was a trustee of the Students' Guild. Gillian is currently working as Communications Officer at the Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industries and has been a key alumni volunteer for a number of years.

Amber crowned world champion

Amber Reed (Exercise and Sport Science 2013) was part of the England Women’s Rugby squad that won the recent World Cup. England beat Samoa and Spain and drew with Canada in the group stages, before beating Ireland in the semi-final and then meeting Canada again in the final. At the second attempt, England came out 21-9 victors. Amber won her first senior cap in November 2012 and has also competed in the Six Nations.
 

Football Varsity 2014

Sports alumni are encouraged to attend this year’s Football Varsity match on Wednesday 15 October, 7pm at St James Park, Exeter. In a change from previous years' varsity games, this year sees the newly promoted EUAFC 1st XI take on local rivals Bath University’s 1st XI in the opening fixture of their BUCS premier south campaign. A Very Abell Debut

Current Cricket Scholar Tom Abell made an impressive 95 on his first-class debut for Somerset against Warwickshire, top scoring for the home side at Taunton’s County Ground. Tom was part of the Men’s Cricket 1st XI that won Gold in last year’s BUCS Indoor Championship and reached the final in the outdoor competition. Exeter men among GB 7s World University Champions

Four Exeter players were among the GB Rugby 7s team that defended their World University Games title in Brazil. Current student Rob Coote and alumni Samuel Blanchet (BEng Mechanical Engineering 2014) Tom Dowding (BA CH History and International Relations 2014) and Hamish Smales (BA Business & Management 2009) defeated Belgium in the final.
