Free online Business and Society course accredited by the ACCA

Enrol now in 'Discovering Business in Society,' a free online course designed to guide your discovery of how businesses function and interact with the wider socio-economic environment. Anyone interested in learning the principles of business is welcome. The course begins on Monday 8 September.


Recognition in Queen's Birthday Honours 2014 list
Several alumni and an Honorary Graduate were included in this year’s Queen’s Birthday Honours list. Recipients are recognised for their services within a particular area, which can include a profession or voluntary service.


Simon celebrates his success

This month, Simon Amos graduated with a 2:1 in Law. A great achievement for any student - but Simon's family is especially proud of his achievement as he is registered blind. Baronesses team up – University honours Baroness Lawrence

Baroness Doreen Lawrence of Clarendon is now an Honorary Graduate of the University of Exeter; as awarded by the University’s Chancellor, Baroness Floella Benjamin, OBE DL, Hon DLitt (Exeter).

UK business incubator named number one in Europe

SETsquared has been ranked as the top university business incubator in Europe and second best in the world. SETsquared is a collaboration between the universities of Bath, Bristol, Exeter, Southampton and Surrey which supports high tech start-up companies, providing student enterprise and enabling academics to maximise the impact of their research.

Student sustainability project claims international award

The Students’ Green Unit (SGU), an innovative sustainability project within the University of Exeter’s Students’ Guild, has been recognised with an international award. The unit, which empowers students to make a difference in environmental and ethical issues, has won the 2014 International Sustainable Campus Network (ISCN) Excellence Award for Student Leadership.

First scientific UAV facility in the UK launched in Cornwall

Cornwall is home to the UK’s first scientific facility dedicated to research involving Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs). A series of talks took place to mark the exciting launch. UAVs – often referred to as drones – have the potential to transform the way researchers capture data about the Earth and are emerging as a major scientific opportunity.


Stress can make hard working mongooses less likely to help in the future

Researchers studying banded mongooses in Uganda have discovered that those who work hard to care for pups may be less likely to invest in future offspring in the same way due to elevated stress hormones.


A teacher's legacy to education

A former teacher has generously given a fifth of all he owned as a gift in his Will to the University. This is the biggest ever legacy gift to Exeter's unrestricted endowment - the Exeter Forever Fund. Legacy gifts like this are an investment in the long term future of education at Exeter.

6th in BUCS national rankings

Exeter finished in 6th position out of 148 institutions in the 2013-14 BUCS rankings. Our leading sports rankings this year include Rugby Union (2nd overall), Sailing (2nd), Cricket (2nd), Hockey (3rd), Golf (3rd), Lacrosse (4th) and Tennis (5th). This season’s standout performances include the Women’s Rugby taking gold in the BUCS Rugby 7s Championships, Men’s Cricket winning the Indoor Cricket Championships and the Rugby First Year Squad winning the BUCS Trophy.

Athlete Development Centre renovation

The Athlete Development Centre (ADC) on the Streatham Campus supports over 450 high performance athletes and scholars across a range of squads, including the University’s 10 Focus Sports on the High Performance Programme. Around £150,000 has been invested by the Sports Office alongside the University’s Annual Fund, to create a high-performance training space unique to the region. Refurbishment is due to be completed in time for University pre-season training next month.

Phil Attwell honoured by BUCS

Phil Attwell, newly appointed Director of Campus Services and former Director of Sport at the University, received the Outstanding Contribution to Higher Education Sport award at the annual BUCS Awards Dinner held in Swansea this month. Since he joined the University as Director of Sport in 2000, over £20 million has been invested in new facilities and services and Phil has overseen a transformation of student sports.
