University to establish US Foundation

The Vice-Chancellor Professor Sir Steve Smith returned to the USA last month to meet with alumni and announce plans to establish a new Foundation based in America to facilitate fundraising for the University.

Graduate becomes Secretary of State for Culture

Exeter graduate Sajid Javid MP has been appointed as the Secretary of State for Culture. Prior to his promotion Sajid was the Financial Secretary to the Treasury. He became the Conservative MP for Bromsgrove in Worcestershire in the 2010 general election.

 

New initiative for medicine access

A campaign group, which was launched by an Exeter alumnus to help patients with life-limiting conditions get access to developing medicines, has welcomed a new initiative by the UK government. The Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency has been seeking applications for the Early Access to Medicines Scheme from the pharmaceutical industry and research organisations.

 


Graduate runner up in MasterChef UK

Jack Lucas was the runner up in BBC television’s cookery show MasterChef. Jack, who graduated last year with a geography degree, was one of three finalists. He had to cook for judges Gregg Wallace and John Torode, watched by millions of viewers.
 


Graduate attempts record-breaking cycle across Canada
An Exeter alumnus is attempting to set a new world record by cycling 3,751 miles across Canada with his family. Will Noel-Smith, along with his brother Harry, father Mike and family friend Hasan Al Hosini will embark on the trans-Canada cycle this month, aiming to complete the feat in less than 13 days 6 hours and 13 minutes (the current record).

 


Trustee sought for Students’ Guild

The University of Exeter Students’ Guild is a charitable organisation committed to making a positive difference to every student’s experience.  It is a democratic body which exists to represent almost 18,000 students and is led by its diverse membership. A vacancy on its Trustee Board has arisen for an individual with professional experience in charity law, senior management in the third/voluntary sector, commerce or fundraising. New website to showcase skills

A new website has gone live that allows recent graduates and students to promote the skills they have. Student Traders allows members to showcase and advertise their businesses, products, community skilled services and trades to prospective employers. It’s open to alumni who graduated within the last three years, as well as current students.

Exeter students among happiest in UK says survey

The University has been ranked seventh in the UK in the prestigious Times Higher Education Student Experience Survey 2014 – leaping from 26th place last year. Students rated their institutions in 21 categories, ranging from the quality of staff and lectures to social life and accommodation.
 

World Dementia Envoy opens health innovation hub

An award-winning centre which is cementing Exeter’s global reputation for health innovation has been officially opened by the World Dementia Envoy and graduate, Dennis Gillings, CBE, PhD. Guests at the launch included Dr Jeremy Farrar, Director of the Wellcome Trust and Sir David Weatherall, Trustee of The Wolfson Foundation who jointly unveiled a plaque acknowledging the generous donation the two organisations made towards the award-winning £27.5 million building.

 

Exeter Biologist Elected Fellow of the Royal Society

Professor Nick Talbot of the College of Life and Environmental Sciences has been elected a Fellow of the Royal Society (FRS), the premier scientific accolade in the United Kingdom. 

 

CSM students bring home the gold from International Mining Games

Students from the Camborne School of Mines are celebrating after winning gold in two events at an internationally-celebrated mining competition. Two teams from the mining school, the Men’s A team and the Co-ed team, secured top spot in the ‘mucking’ event at the recent International Mining Games, held in the Midwestern US state of Missouri.

The future’s bright, the future’s green

A new Green Consultancy Programme sees students receive intensive training on environmental projects, to enable them to offer businesses advice as a junior consultant. Junior consultants are available to help alumni businesses and the programme has grown from students’ commitment to creating positive change, and dovetails with the University’s sustainability commitment.

National Volunteers’ Week

Volunteers’ Week is an annual national celebration of the fantastic contribution millions of people make throughout the UK. In recognition of the great volunteer work taken on by hundreds of the University's students, alumni and staff each year, we are celebrating with a showcase of seven University volunteers; we hope their stories will inspire you. Networking skills events for students

Students recently benefited from an event organised by The Alumnae Group, a group of successful female graduates from a variety of sectors. Many students feel daunted about networking in a business setting and the event aimed to provide practical advice about the value of building networks.

BUCS Championship Success

We celebrated BUCS Championship Golds in Women’s Rugby 7’s and Men’s Indoor Cricket  recently. The Women’s Indoor Cricket team also saw success, having also qualified for the finals, they came away with the Bronze medal. Both cricket teams are chasing a place in the outdoor competition final at Lord’s. The University currently lies in 7th position of all UK institutions in the overall BUCS (British Universities and Colleges Sport) rankings.
 

Vic Ambler Golf Centre Opens

The latest addition to the University’s sports facilities is a Golf Centre which was formerly opened on 15 May. The Centre is named after former Chair of Physical Education, Vic Ambler, whose passion and commitment has played a big role in making sport at Exeter what it is today. The University is a leading UK institution for golf and our students won the 2013 BUCS Premier League
 

Alumni triumph in Northcote Trophy

The annual alumni vs students golf competition took place over 2 & 3 May and saw the alumni team retain the title. The handicapped competition was held at Dawlish Warren and a high standard of golf was played throughout. The next event in the golf calendar is the Alumni Golf Day on 15 August at the picturesque St George’s Hill GC in Surrey. For more information contact SportsAlumni@exeter.ac.uk.
