Exeter Entrepreneurs is a Guild Society for students interested in entrepreneurial ventures

Exeter entrepreneurs - Advice and Encouragement

‘Be passionate about what you do, because if you are not, then when the first hurdle comes up, you will give up. The most successful entrepreneurs never give up’

Wise words of advice from Geography alumnus, Rob Holmes, founder of the highly successful Gro-Company to more than 50 current Exeter students with entrepreneurial ambitions who gathered one evening in November to network with successful entrepreneurial graduates of Exeter.

The evening was organised by Exeter Entrepreneurs – an Exeter Guild Society for students who might be considering – or already embarking on – an entrepreneurial venture. Other alumni insights were offered by internet entrepreneur Alan Desmier (Managing Director of Apply. Digital and Founder and Director of e-finity Leads Ltd) and Deborah Hallett (Managing Director at At 90 Degrees Ltd and Chairman of the Board of Directors at Rolle Exmouth Limited). The panel of alumni and non-alumni speakers shared stories of their career journeys, spoke frankly about the challenges they have faced and the joys of business ownership, took questions and chatted with students over drinks and snacks.

Exeter Entrepreneurs has gone from strength to strength over recent years, (the Society currently has 100 members) reflecting an increase in the number of students keen to start their own businesses – either now or in the future.

Society President, Nick O’Ferrall, was delighted with the event; ‘Advice from alumni who have gone on to forge their own successful businesses is invaluable to students with entrepreneurial ambitions – as you can tell by the number of students who came along on a cold and windy November night! The speakers all clearly love what they do and are passionate about starting up a business. Obviously there are many challenges along the way, but I think we’ve all come away with some really good insights, tips and food for thought’.

We are always keen to hear from our entrepreneurial alumni – if you have a story to tell, advice to give or could offer support of any kind to our students, please do get in touch with us at alumni@exeter.ac.uk.
