In the 1920s, Charlie Chaplin was almost certainly the most widely recognized figure in the world, not only from his universally successful movies, but also from the circulation of his image in a variety of other forms: comic books, sheet music, toys, games, souvenirs and pottery. The 'little tramp' character, known as "Charlot" in most non-English-speaking countries, was instantly recognisable and evocative of a whole range of emotions. Production of this Chaplin imagery abated after the 1940s, but the Chaplin tramp figure is still frequently reproduced today.
