Exeter Synthetic Biology Sandpit
| Date | 3 June 2011 |
|---|---|
| Time | 08.45 - late |
| Location | Egenis, Byrne House, Streatham Campus |
This full day sandpit for selected participants was led by Orkun Soyer and John Dupré to raise awareness, foster collaboration and stimulate new research at Exeter in the field of synthetic biology, an exciting, multidisciplinary and strategically important emerging research field.
Talks by four external facilitators led into open discussion and brainstorming. Participants interacted, discussed and formed research projects during the day, which were presented to facilitators and peers for feedback. The eight emerging research projects have all been developed into proposals and submitted for evaluation; seed funding will be allocated to selected projects.
External facilitators were: Mark Bedau (Reed College, USA, who also gave an open talk on 2nd June, entitled: 'Why emergence drives the science and politics of synthetic biology'); Stuart Dunbar (Head of Biochemistry, Syngenta); Antonis Papachristodoulou (Oxford University); Paul Freemont (Imperial College) and Jane Calvert (University of Edinburgh).
