This was an experimental event held jointly in Second Life and real life, with speaker Professor Piet Hut from the Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton.
Over the last few years, with various colleagues, Professor Hut has initiated research activities in various virtual worlds, notably Second Life, such as MICA, the Meta Institute for Computational Astrophysics (http://www.mica-vw.org/) and Kira, a broadly interdisciplinary virtual research institute (http://www.kira.org/).
Professor Hut gave us a quick overview of some of the lessons learned, before answering questions and leading the discussion about the current state and future of research activities in virtual worlds, with an emphasis on interdisciplinary research.
A diverse and colourful range of avatars, from Exeter and other Universities, visited our virtual auditorium for this event. Our real life audience watched on screen. Although they could hear Professor Hut and see his avatar, a technical hitch unfortunately prevented the real life audience from asking questions directly via the microphone; however, a few were relayed via those who were attending in Second Life and real life at the same time.
If you are interested in using Second Life, please see our Second Life pages.
