Our work in collaboration with Airbus Group on virtual sensors is now being demonstrated on simulators in its headquarters in Toulouse.
Our work with companies, including Rolls Royce, has created new lightweight structures, such as honeycomb-cored sandwich panels incorporating in-built vibration damping. We have combined advanced numerical simulation techniques and prototype testing to new simulation tools – for example to examine wear processes in structures. New improved modelling methods for fretting wear will lead to improved design and cost savings through an increased lifetime of the contracting components found in vibrating machines and structures.

Energy Harvesting Systems
We have developed energy harvesting, powered wireless sensing nodes, based on our expertise in:

In collaboration with our industrial partners, including Airbus Group, BAE Systems and Ultra Electronics we are now developing the technology further for structural health monitoring (SHM) in aircraft.
Our state-of-the-art Centre for Additive Layer Manufacturing (CALM) is one of a select group in the world which makes and develops high-performing polymer structures using different 3D printing and Additive Manufacturing (AM) technologies. Working with companies such as Airbus Group and DSTL, we specialise in developing advanced composites combining the high-temperature tolerance of PEEK with compression moulding AM capabilities to produce components which can be rapidly deployed into production. We work on all stages of the manufacturing process, including powder morphology, material flow and sintering as well as optimisation of design and structural properties.
Manufacturing systems and supply chains
Our research in adaptively-evolving supply chains has had an impact across the globe. We are able to provide a range of tools and methodologies for analysing complex supply chain configurations. Our work with CIFUNSA, the main supplier for automotive companies including GM, Ford and Chrysler, has directly led to significant improvements in revenue and profitability, including a 400 per cent increase in sales.
