University spin out company wins award

A company that originated from ground breaking research into image-based meshing techniques at the University of Exeter has won a South West Biomedical iNet Innovation Awards in Export.

The award recognises Simpleware’s achievements in world-wide export sales, and in developing industry-leading software solutions for the conversion of 3D image data into high-quality computer models which are used for engineering design and simulation.

The technology is underpinned by patented techniques, and is used to generate models for objects and structures for which no computer (CAD) drawings are available, such as the human body, composite materials, and soils.

Simpleware’s founder Prof Philippe Young said: “We are delighted that our company has been recognised by the South West Biomedical Innovation Network for its high level export sales. It is a testament to the effort made by the whole team at Simpleware over a number of years.”

More than 85 per cent of Simpleware’s sales are export-based with customers ranging from international blue chip corporations to research institutes including high profile entities such as NASA, US Naval Research Laboratory, and Siemens, as well as a wide range of universities worldwide.

The Biomedical iNet’s second Innovation Awards took place on October 23rd, 2012 at the Grand Hotel in Bristol. The evening celebrated the success of companies across the South West.

Awards were presented for the following categories: Start Up, Innovation, Growth, NHS Partnership, and Export.

Date: 12 November 2012
