BICSc Cleaning Academy (The British Institute of Cleaning Science)
The BICSc Cleaning Academy opened in January 2010 and has already seen over 200 members of the cleaning staff successfully completing the minimum 14 BICSc Skills.
The main aims of the Academy is to:
- Improve the cleaning standards within the University
- Set and maintain a National Standard for the level of skills the cleaning staff should have, currently the qualification is the ‘Cleaning Professional’s Skills Suite’
- Motivate and give recognition to those directly engaged on cleaning tasks
- Provide BICSc training for all new and existing staff
The principals of BICSc are:
- Correct and safe use of equipment/materials
- Care and storage of equipment and materials
- Care to the cleaning surface and surrounding environment
- Quality of finished task
The BICSc training is carried out by Mark Williams who is the Universities Lead Assessor for BICSc. Mark also works closely with the Housekeeping and Facilities staff to improve the cleaning products/equipment, regular cleaning checks and leads on 5s Lean initiative to remove and reduce the waste within work areas and store cupboards.

| CS15 | Baths, showers, bidets, washroom furniture |
| CS19 | Stairs, landings, balustrades & handrails |
| CS20 | Wall washing |
| CS23 | Glass cleaning |
The future
As well as continuing to provide training for new staff, existing staff and re-fresher training the BICSc Academy will also be looking to carry out BICSc Training within the Catering areas to ensure the staff are trained in the basics of BICSc to improve the cleaning & hygiene standards as well as reviewing cleaning products & equipment to ensure efficiency and cost effectiveness.
