The Research, Innovation, Learning and Development Centre (RILD) which consists of the Wellcome Wolfson Centre for Medical Research and new Post Graduate Education Centre will be constructed on the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital (Wonford) site in Exeter. The site is adjacent to the existing Exeter Medical School Building on the Barrack Road edge of the hospital site.

The Wellcome Wolfson Medical Research Facility is required to expand the current research activities of the Exeter Medical School and will comprise both clinical research areas and class two and three medical research laboratories, complete with offices meeting rooms, write up areas, primary laboratories and specialist laboratory spaces.

The new Post Graduate Education Centre (PGEC) is to replace and enhance the facilities currently on the hospital site for this purpose and will comprise of teaching rooms, some with specialist equipment within them, lecture theatres and seminar rooms, social areas and break out space. The existing Post Graduate Education Centre will be demolished to make way for the new buildings.

In line with the University’s objective for all new buildings to achieve a BREEAM Excellent rating for environmental performance, the RILD Centre has been designed throughout with these sustainability performance indicators in mind. View a pdf of the BREEAM case study.
