Estate Services

Estate Services is responsible for the planning, management and development of the University estate, and ensuring it is fit for purpose to meet the aims and objectives of the University.

The teams of Built Estate, Engineering & Direct Works and Grounds make up the directory of Estate Services with each ensuring that our physical and natural spaces are both safe and support the University’s vision of creating graduates of distinction.

All together this represents the employment of 140 specialists in construction project management, building surveying, mechanical and electrical engineering, strategic planning, arboriculture and horticulture specialists as well as specialist trade staff.

The Built Estate Team are responsible for the delivery of the capital and long term maintenance strategies as well as providing specialist advice regarding the space management of the estate. Delivering projects of between £25k and £52M. To date this represents the successful new build of the Living Systems Building, the Forum and Business School, ‘Building One’ and Streatham Court refurbishment, and the Sports Park development, to name a few.

Also responsible for the delivery of the Long Term Maintenance programme of works with projects such as replacement windows at Northcote House and campus wide fire precaution work.

Engineering and Direct Works are responsible for a significant proportion of the technical management of the University’s Estate. Its Energy team manage; the multi the million pound budget for the supply of gas, water and electricity; the Low Carbon Commitment Implementation Plan to ensure the University is on track to meet its carbon reduction targets; the University’s revolving green energy projects and set and deliver the Sustainable Travel Plan.  The Engineering team delivers the management of contractors undertaking work from simple plant servicing to major systems upgrades and replacement as well as providing support to the capital project delivery team in Built Estate.  A dedicated in house maintenance team provides in and out of hours planned and reactive maintenance to what is effectively Devon’s tenth largest, and independently run, town.

The Grounds Team are responsible for maintaining the Streatham Campus to the standard of botanical garden and both campuses are accredited annually for the Green Flag award. The total area of the University's estates totals 153 hectares:  Streatham Campus covers 114 hectares, St Luke's covers 8 hectares while our sports pitches cover 41 hectares, at our Topsham Sports Ground and at Duckes Meadow, by the River Exe.
