Events during the week (6-10 February) include an organic food taster meal and talk with Guy Watson from Riverford Organics, seminar from the scientist behind 'Up In Smoke', a Dr Bike session, recycled fashion show, energy efficiency pub quiz and a national day of action.

Go Green Week 2012: 6-10 February

Staff and students at the University of Exeter are holding a week of events aimed at inspiring people to take action to prevent climate change.

Go Green Week at the University of Exeter has been organised by Students’ Guild Green Society, Slow Food Society and Be The Change Society in association with the University’s Sustainability Department. Go Green Week is part of a national event coordinated by People and Planet. Universities, colleges and schools from across the country are running creative and practical events throughout the next week to promote sustainable living.

Meat-free Monday:
6:30pm, Come Veg with Me. A vegetarian meal cooked with a chef from Riverford Organics and a group of students to be held at la Touche Restaurant on campus. Meal accompanied with talk from Riverford Organics founder Guy Watson. People invited to make pledges to eat less meat and become a part-time carnivore. Event organised by Slow Food and Green student societies. Tickets are £5 and available from the Guild Information Point in Devonshire House from Wednesday 1st February.

Travel-light Tuesday:
11am-2pm Dr Bike, outside INTO Building. Free bike repair, reservation on the day. Mobile Cycle Service to offer a free Dr. Bike service (basic bike service) for students and staff members, priority booking slots available to UniCycle (University Bike User Group), Green, Be The Change and Slow Food Societies on the day. This event is aimed at promoting sustainable travel and safer cycling. Event to be based outside the INTO Building on Stocker Road and held by the Sustainability Department in conjunction with Green, Be the Change and Slow Food societies.
 
5-6pm 'Pimp My Bike' Cycle Ride Cycle ride from the Cathedral Green Exeter to the Queen’s building on Streatham Campus, University of Exeter. The idea is to make your bike (and yourself) as bright as possible and have a fun ride. You can even wear fancy dress. The prize for the best and brightest cyclist is a voucher for a meal for two at Cafe Reed. The first ten people to sign up will get their choice of either a FREE reflective back pack cover / or FREE wind up lights.

6-8pm 'Up In Smoke' free seminar and Q&A session. In conjunction with the Bee Society in Tremough and the Sustainability Department, we will be video-linking live to Cornwall for a talk from scientist, Mike Hands who is behind the film Up in smoke to be viewed on Wednesday 1st February Queens L.T.2. This award winning documentary film follows Cornwall based scientist Mike Hands, who has spent 25 years working to find a solution to the slash and burn agriculture threatening the rainforests. His solution ‘could save more carbon emissions annually than all global aviation combined…but is the world ready to listen?’ There will also be a Q&A session – your opportunity to learn more about the story behind the film.

Waste-Not Wednesday:
5-6:30pm, Go Green Fashion Show, M&D Room. Be the Change society will be hosting a fashion show in the Long Lounge, Devonshire House. In the first half, outfits from retailers of recycled/fairtrade/ethical fashion or accessories will be modelled, while the second half will be a competition for people attending the event to create an outfit out of recycled materials and the best outfit will win a prize. The retailers will be selling their products all evening.

Switch-off Thursday:
7pm, Energy Efficiency Pub Quiz, The Ram. This Pub quiz with a twist, will be held by Green Society at the Ram to raise awareness of energy efficiency in the home as part of the Big Green Makeover initiative in a fun and interactive way. Prizes for winning and losing teams.

Friday National Day of Action:
12-3pm, Green Fair, Forum Piazza. Stalls include: Transition Exeter, Exeter Green Party, Shillingford Farm, The Real Food Company, The Bike Shed, Book-Cycle, Ottery Brewery, Green Soc, Slow Food, Be The Change, Oxfam, WildSoc, Exeter Sustainability Dept, and the creation of a 'green art attack'
