Campus Watch

Campus Watch comes from an initiative that is used at Loughbourough University; it sees the campus community as the neighbourhood that watches out and reports anything suspicious to the security department to help deter criminals from operating on the campus.

It also makes us aware of the different types of crime that is occurring on campus and the frequency with which it is happening. Due to the size of the campus without the help of vigilant members of the community working together we might not be aware of everything that is happening in our community.

This information can be used to help us act proactively by developing initiatives and strategies to overcome trends in crimewhich benefits the wider community by keeping the campus a safer place to work, study and visit.

Crime details

One of the main reports of crime that we receive is when people leave their belongings like mobile phones, laptops, wallets etc unattended. This is an ideal time for an opportunist to take advantage of the situation and take the item.  This could be avoided in the majority of cases by not leaving personal belongings unattended or locking them away out of sight

We occasionally receive reports of thefts from students rooms. On investigating we often find that either the window or door has been left insecure. On occasions we have found that this can also lead to other flatmates taking the opportunity to play practical jokes.  To avoid this kind of incident please ensure your room is secure by closing windows, locking doors, and making sure the corridor door is not propped open and front door is securely locked.

One of the crimes which we have been combating and continue to fight against is bikes being taken from campus. There are lots of initiatives which have helped to deter bike thefts such as free bike marking and awareness days which are held on campus. We run theses initiatives in conjunction with the police.

The best way for all of us as a community to deter criminals from coming on to our campus is to remain vigilant and report anything that seems suspicious.
