Car parking permits in Exeter

These pages provide information about car parking for the Exeter campuses only. Please see the Falmouth Exeter Plus website for information about parking at the Penryn Campus. Please note that Parking Permits issued at Exeter or Penryn Campuses are valid on all sites.

Eligibility

Eligibility for a permit is dependent on many factors including if you car share and how far you live from the University. Full details are given on this page but if you need clarification please contact us on 01392 725678 or email the Car Parking Office.

Existing permit holders

Due to a University wide review into parking policy and eligibility criteria, there may be the situation whereby colleagues who currently have a permit will no longer be eligible.  If this applies to you, please check the Existing permit holders.  The parking office will also contact all those affected in February 2020 by e-mail.

New permit applicants

To check if you are automatically eligible for a permit, please use the postcode checking tool.  If you are not automatically eligible, please check whether you qualify under one of the exceptions listed below;

  1. Staff with caring responsibilities – staff with children under 12 or dependent relatives.
  2. Staff with poor access to public transport – staff who must use more than two different public transport services to make the journey to work or where public transport does not exist.
  3. Staff who work shifts or unsocial hours – staff who start work before 06:30 or finish after 22:30.

If you are eligible, please apply online, otherwise please visit our sustainable travel web pages for advice on alterntive means of transport

Staff car sharing

Members of staff who are eligible to apply for a standard or authority to park permit are entitled to apply for a free car share permit. To obtain a permit you must first register online with the University’s Car Share Scheme and create a Liftshare ID. Please note all members of the Liftshare team must be eligible for a permit.

Please quote your Liftshare ID number on the application form.‌‌

Students

UG and PGT students are required to adhere to the same eligibility criteria as staff.  All permits issued to students are charged at a diffeent rate and are required to be paid in full at the time of application.  Permits issued to students are only valid until August of the current year, and a pro rata charge is applied for those applying in year.  The rates for permits for students can be found on the permit rates web pages.

Public car parking for students

Finding parking spaces around our Exeter campuses is a particular challenge, and we strongly advise you not to bring a car. There is no parking on campus for staff or students who reside within the city boundary and hardly any off-campus parking is available in the vicinity.

Large sections of the city operate a residents’ parking zone scheme. Most properties are eligible to receive a maximum of two permits per property whilst student halls, new developments and re-developed properties are often excluded from the on-street residents parking schemes around them.

If you do need to bring a car to the city, please consider the following to ensure you are doing so in a legally compliant and considerate manner.

  • Ensure the vehicle is registered correctly at the term time address to ensure vehicle insurance is valid whilst in Exeter;
  • Council issued resident’s permits may only be used by the named person for whom it is issued, who can provide on request evidence of ownership or tenancy of that address, along with evidence of car ownership of the registration number stated on the permit;
  • Permits cannot be transferred or amended to a different name, address or zone so please return all resident’s and visitor permits when you vacate the property - the sale or purchase of permits from other addresses is forbidden;
  • It is the driver’s responsibility to ensure that the vehicle is parked safely and wholly within the confines of a marked parking place. The vehicle should not be parked on a footpath or verge, or in a hazardous manner; and please ensure you are not obstructing entrances to driveways and other access points for other residents.

Any breaches of the resident’s parking permits terms and conditions can result in the permanent withdrawal of permits. For more information visit the Devon County Council website.

The Streatham and St Luke’s campuses are located within easy walking distance of the city centre and on regular bus routes. The University provides a range of services to support students travelling by alternative modes - see the Sustainability travel pages for more details.
