Access to Internships - Subsidies

Access to Internships is a fund to help the students and graduates of the University of Exeter to secure a paid internship.

What is an internship?

The University of Exeter defines an internship as paid employment that:       

  • uses undergraduate/graduate level skills, knowledge and experience
  • aids student/graduate career development
  • provides support and training
  • is undertaken at the beginning of a career

Internships roles needed:

The University of Exeter is in the fortunate position that we have many companies seeking to employ our students and graduates, particularly into Business Management, Marketing, and IT roles. Although not essential, we would especially welcome applications from companies offering the following roles:

  • Charity Fundraising and Campaigns
  • Editor/Journalist/Publisher
  • Librarian/Archivist
  • Paralegal/Litigator
  • Events Manager
  • Teacher/Trainer
  • Researcher
  • Dance/Drama Performers
  • Health and Social Care Practitoners
  • Policy Officer
  • Accountant
  • Finanacier/Risk Manager/Insurance Broker
  • Environment/Sustainability Consultant

Subsidies available to business

Access to Enternships
The University is inviting enterprising start-up businesses, to apply for a £500 subsidy, to offer a paid internship to an Exeter student. The micro-SME business must be within the first 2 years of trading. The intern can be employed by the company or if already self employed, can be paid as a contractor. The intern must be paid at least minimum wage. The internship must be at least 210 hours and undertaken on a part-time basis during term time or full- time during the vacation.

Funds available: £500 x 6
University of Exeter SME fund
The University is inviting SMEs to apply for a £500 subsidy, to offer a paid internships to students of University of Exeter. The companies must be based in the South-West or South- East, as the majority of our students are from these areas. The intern must be paid at least minimum wage. The internship must be at least 210 hours and undertaken on a part-time basis during term time or full-time during the vacation.

Funds available: £500 x 8
Santander Universities
The University has joined forces with Santander to offer a generous subsidy to support Business access Exeter graduate talent.

The company, which must be an SME, will receive £1,500 towards the cost of a full-time graduate internship.  The intern must be employed by the company, working no more than 37 hours a week and paid £1000 per month.  The internship must last for a minimum of 3 months and the intern needs to be working by Monday 14th January, 2013. This is strictly for Exeter 2012 graduates only.

Terms and Conditions

Employer - University - Intern obligations

Employers can apply for more than one subsidy, but will only be paid one subsidy for each intern.

All parties must also agree to the terms and conditions.

All subsidies will be paid on the successful placement of an Exeter Graduate or Student into an an approved Internship and Internship Agreements signed.

Student/Graduate criteria

  • A University of Exeter student or graduate (2012/2013)
  • Seeking an undergraduate or graduate level internship
  • Have the right to work in the UK

Employer criteria

  • The company needs to be either a Micro Business (1-5 employees) or a Small or Medium Enterprise (fewer than 250 employers and with a turnover of less than £10 million a year)
  • This must be a new opportunity (i.e. you must be working for a new company or demonstrate you have a new more responsible role, or have moved from an unpaid to paid role.)
  • The company can apply for more than one student/ graduate and recieve funding for each if they meet all criteria. Please specify this on the application form.

The Internship placement needs to:

  • Use undergraduate/ graduate level skills, knowledge and/or experience
  • Aid career development
  • Provide training and support
  • Be within the UK
  • Offer a minimum of 210 hours of work, unless specified otherwise
  • Be undertaken part-time during term-time (no more than 15 hours a week) or full-time during student vacation period, or if graduated
  • Pay at least minimum wage
