Why do employers love Exeter graduates?

The world is full of graduate recruiters longing to hear from Exeter students. And that’s good news for your job prospects! Along with a typically high academic record, our graduates demonstrate a wide variety of skills needed by employers developed through work experience, voluntary activities, enterprising initiatives, specific employability training, sports clubs, societies, and being part of a vibrant student body.

Recruiters spend valuable time and money seeking the best potential applicants for work by targeting Exeter students. In 2009/10 we hosted 31 employer presentations from organisations including Procter & Gamble, Linklaters and the Met Office. There were employer led skills sessions, mock interviews and informal ‘drop-in’ opportunities to meet employers.

We hosted four careers fairs, including a Law Fair, attracting more than 60 exhibitors. Staff met many recruiters and travelled hundreds of miles for briefings from organisations such as law firms and the Civil Service Fast Stream.

Exeter graduates have the potential to be the future of many organisations. We know that being a 21st-century student isn’t as easy as it looks, and we aim to support student aspirations and opportunities so that the world beyond Exeter can recognise your energy and commitment.

Getting a job is not just about obtaining a good degree: the skills students develop throughout university shape their employability. Students at Exeter have access to awide range of opportunities to build their skills and experiences alongside their academic studies, and understand how they can transfer these skills into the recruitment market. The Careers and Employment Service encourages students to meet local and national employers so they understand what employers are looking for, which is invaluable in an increasingly competitive marketplace.

I've been working with University of Exeter students for several years now and find them extremely bright, efficiently organised, keen and eminently well prepared for the jobs market. In terms of career opportunities, Exeter provides a steady stream of graduates for the BBC and other media organisations, and rightly so. The University offers everything a student could need to start building up necessary experience: the student media scene is excellent, with a vibrant newspaper, a website and radio and TV stations.

Over the past few years, Procter & Gamble has begun to actively recruit at the University of Exeter. We have been impressed with the calibre of the university’s staff and students, the willingness of the departments to partner with industry and the great enthusiasm of the students. Exeter students are very lucky to have such a knowledgeable and proactive Careers and Employment Service – I would love to see more students taking advantage of their services, in particular the advice on how to construct a winning CV!
