Your Careers Service

How can we help you?

This website aims to guide you through thinking about your employability and your career and will help you access the services we provide.

Before you do anything else, sign up for My Career Zone, our online system that allows you to search for jobs, sign-up for employability events find volunteering and internship opportunities, book appointments with careers consultants and much more.

Below is a quick overview of what support is available to you from the University - it's really important to start as early as possible. You can also look at The Exeter Careers Guide 2012. To help you think about what you should be doing and when, we've developed the Career timeline (.pdf).

We are happy to meet you in person to discuss a wide range of career related issues. You can speak to a member of the Information team for initial enquiries and help and a look at available resources.  If you would like to, you can then book an appointment online to see a Careers Consultant for more in-depth help.

We also provide support, advice and opportunities for recent graduates.

You can keep up to date with University of Exeter careers news and events by joining us on Twitter and Facebook.

Choosing a career

If you have no idea what you’d like to do when you leave University, or have a rough plan but would like to know more, we have a range of online and offline career research resources to help you narrow down your options.

Our Information Teams (based at the Career Zone on the Streatham Campus and at the Careers Advisory Service, Tremough) can help guide you through a wealth of information to match your skills and interests to a career that will suit you, so if you’re unsure where to start - pop in and say hello.

When choosing a career many students find it useful to speak to graduates working in the field they're interested in. To help you make contact with Exeter alumni (and pick their brains!) we've set-up the Exepert Scheme. In addition, if you’d like to receive long-term career guidance, advice and networking opportunities from a member of the business community or our pool of alumni, then you can sign-up to our Career Mentor Scheme.

Throughout the academic year we provide opportunities for you to meet top graduate recruiters on campus to find out more about specific companies and industries. These range from traditional careers fairs and employer presentations to mock-interviews and informal drop-in sessions. Search for events in My Career Zone and keep an eye-out for employability e-newsletters for details.

It might be that you decide that you would like to continue with your studies, if so, we can help support you through Choosing postgraduate study.

Making yourself more employable

Aside from your academic studies, there are many activities that you can engage with while you're here that will make you more employable.

We run skills training sessions ranging from Team Work and People Management to Networking and Interview Techniques that will really boost your confidence when you head out into the world of work.

Volunteering and extra-curricular activities will demonstrate to employers that you're a team-player and that you actively join-in. You can gain official recognition for your extra-curricular activities through The Exeter Award.

In today's competitive graduate job market, having work experience under your belt is more important than ever. We support several internship schemes to help you find a placement either as part of your course or during vacation time. The benefits of part-time work should also never be underestimated – it really can boost your experience and your CV.

There are an increasing number of opportunities to work and study abroad as part of your course, a fantastic way to broaden your horizons and experience another culture.

Finding and getting a job

Login to My Career Zone to search for vacancies from employers specifically targeting Exeter students and graduates.

Even when you've graduated you can still access many of the services that we provide, and we have placed many graduates in work through our Graduate Business Partnership scheme.

We offer training and support with actually getting a job, from writing CVs and completing job application to shining at interviews, and getting through assessment centres and psychometric testing.
