Take caution when applying for jobs

Important messages for students applying for jobs

Spam filters

We have been informed that some emails sent to students by employers (which relate to genuine information following job applications) might have been identified as spam by the University’s spam filters.

We would therefore advise that when applying for jobs you consider providing a personal email address as well as, or instead of, your exeter.ac.uk account as this will help to ensure that you don’t miss out on important information from these companies.

If you are awaiting communication from an employer and believe you may have been affected by the University's spam filter, we recommend making direct contact with that company to alert them to the situation.

Phishing emails

Increasingly there is a growing number of fraudsters contacting job seekers with bogus offers of employment and using 'Phishing' emails to collect personal details for the purposes of fraud and illegally extorting money from unsuspecting victims.

If you are unsure about any communication that you receive we advise the following:

  • Do not respond to any unsolicited emails or employment offers from people you are unfamiliar with
  • Do not disclose your personal/financial details to anyone you do not know
  • Be extra vigilant if you are approached by organisations who charge an advance fee of any kind (e.g. placement fees, immigration processing fees, work permit fees etc.)
