The Role of a Chorister

The chapel choir is an ensemble of 24 students - 6 sopranos, 6 altos, 6 tenors and 6 basses - who, on successfully auditioning, are awarded an annual choral scholarship.

Being a member of the choir means the opportunity to sing high standard choral music during term time in the beautiful Mary Harris Memorial Chapel (on the University's Streatham Campus), which boasts a stunning acoustic for music. We also sing occasional services (e.g. Carol services) at St Luke's Chapel.

As well as giving concerts around the wider area of Devon, the choir sings services at least twice a term in Exeter Cathedral, is responsible for the music at University of Exeter graduation ceremonies, and tours annually. The scholarship also offers solo opportunities and extra fees for other services (weddings, concerts etc).

The recreational life of the choir mirrors its musical vibrancy; working and singing together creates a close-knit group of good friendships and we enjoy many social events.

The scholars of the University Chapel are expected to commit to:

Wednesdays*

4:00pm - 5:00pm Rehearsal
5:00pm - 6:00pm Evensong

Thursdays

7:00pm - 9:30pm Rehearsal

Alternate Sundays

6:00pm - 7:00pm Rehearsal
7:00pm - 8:00pm Choral Eucharist Service

Second Sunday of the Month During Term Time

Time TBC

* The University typically timetables Wednesday afternoons as 'free', to enable students to participate in societies, sporting events and choirs etc - so choristers do not need to worry about the Wednesday rehearsal and Evensong clashing with their academic timetable.
