Join the Chapel Choir

If you are a University of Exeter student who will be studying at Exeter for a full academic year or longer, then you are very welcome to audition for the Chapel Choir. There is no age limit - mature students are welcome.

For full details of what would be expected of you as a chorister, please see the role of a chorister.

Auditions

The choir attracts singers of a high musical standard.

Prospective scholars will ideally have had some background in choral music at school or elsewhere, but this is not a requirement for auditioning. Familiarity with the Anglican choral tradition is desirable, but not essential.

Audition requirements are as follows:

  1. 2 contrasting pieces, prepared by the candidate
  2. Ear tests
  3. Psalm chanting – chanting Anglican and plainsong at sight
  4. Sight-singing tests

In addition to vocal quality, the expectations at audition are exceptional sight singing skills, general musicianship and the ability to work to a high standard within a small group.

Chapel Choir 2017-18

We are now looking to establish the Chapel Choir of the forthcoming academic year.

Auditions will take place during the first week of the Autumn Term (25th September - 2nd October 2017).

This year's vacancies are:

  • 2 Soprano Scholarships
  • 3 Alto Scholarships
  • 3 Bass Scholarships
  • 1 Organ Scholarship

The choral scholarships are worth £300 per annum as well as extra fees for other services (weddings, concerts etc). The £300 scholarship is given in two halves through the academic year.

The choir are also responsible for the music at graduation ceremonies, which bolsters the scholarship by a further £300.
