Dr. Anastasia Somerville-Wong

I have the privilege of being the very first Humanist Chaplain to join the Multifaith Chaplaincy Team at the University of Exeter, with the support of my sponsoring bodies; the Non-Religious Pastoral Support Network (NRPSN), Humanists UK, Exeter Humanists and Exeter Humanist Students.

I have considerable experience as a Pastoral Carer and Mentor in higher education, child protection social work, youth and community work, hospitals, care homes and schools. I underwent an assessment and training in pastoral care with Humanists UK, a membership organisation of the Network for Pastoral, Spiritual and Religious Care in Health, and am an accredited member of the Non-Religious Pastoral Support Network.

In addition to pastoral care, which is primarily about listending and using 'counselling-type' conversation skills, my role as Humanist Chaplain includes advocacy, signposting, community building and the organisation of educational and social events, and the creation/leadership of appropriate rituals and celebrations. I also support the student society Exeter Humanist Students www.exeterguild.org/societies/ExeAHS/

While my own world-view is progressive and Humanist, I take inspiration from the insights and practices of many of the world's faiths and philosophical traditions.  I have also worked for many years with people of a more orthodox persuasion from a variety of faith backgrounds, and am therefore able to provide pastoral and spritiual care for all persons with the utmost confidentiality and respect for people's individual beliefs and values.

For more information about me and my work as a Humanist Chaplain, and for wide-ranging articles and interviews on humanistic and progressive thought and practice, please see my blog at www.secularliturgies.wordpress.com. More information about the Non-Religious Pastoral Support Network, including the code of practice that I am bound to follow, can be found online at www.nrpsn.org.uk. I look forward to meeting you!
