Hi!
I'm the one who goes around on campus with a bright blue skull-cap.
Why do I do it?
Well, if I were strictly Orthodox, I would probably say as a mark of respect to the Creator of the Universe, and to show that everywhere is sacred space.
But I'm not - my background is that of an extremely Liberal Judaism, but I'm now President of a very mixed Jewish community in Exeter, and I offer to be a chaplain to all Jews on campus. So I wear it partly out of solidarity, partly as a uniform, so that you immediately know who I am, and, yes, partly for the same reasons of respect and understanding that we are all sacred, spritual beings.
As part of the Chaplaincy team, I am also here for anyone of any faith, or none, to be available to talk to. If you see me, please say hello. If you have questions, please ask. As a Jew, I love questions - I don't promise answers, in fact I will probably answer you with more questions, but I love discussing the big questions we can't answer, as well as trying to help with the smaller questions which get in the way. And often those smaller questions get bigger and bigger if you can't find someone to talk to.
The two Jewish chaplains are usually around on Fridays - Robin Kanarek and I share the day - she is usually around in the morning, and I cover the afternoon. We are usually in the Forum. Ask at the Student Information desk if you cannot see us. Drop by for a chat, a coffee, and anything else. I hope to continue the Basic Biblical Hebrew Classes on Friday afternoons, and the service at 4pm every Friday.
As one of the Chaplains to Birks Halls, Moberly and West Garth, I will try to be around there on Friday evenings. Call me any time, or just say hello if you see me.
